When you’re trying to get those training miles in, there’s nothing worse than nagging ankle pain which just won’t go away.
You’re not in full-blown, call-an-ambulance agony…but you’re not in perfect health either. Aches, tenderness and lingering soreness around the bottom of your calf (just above your heel) are causing you discomfort every time you train.
Stop running now. If you address your strain/sprain now while it’s still minor, you can avoid a more serious injury down the road. And this is especially true if your ankle pain comes from achilles tendonitis. (Which it most likely does).
This 30 second test will tell you if you have achilles tendonitis:

Catching your injury while it’s minor means you’ll be able to fix it within a few days. But a more advanced case can take up to six months to heal.

Clasp the front and back of the ankle which is hurting. |

Then lean forward, keeping the back of your heel on the ground. Repeat this movement several times. |
There are two possible things which could happen…

Your foot or heel starts rising off the ground: you have a tight achilles tendon.
Your next step is stretching out your calf and achilles tendon with targeted exercises. It’ll get rid of your pain and stop the injury escalating. |

Your foot or heel stays on the ground: something else is going on.
You don’t have achilles tendonitis, but your pain is a sign that something isn’t right. Your next step is booking an appointment with a chiropractor to find out what’s wrong and how to fix it. |
Whichever one of these outcomes you get, the most important thing you can do is start using corrective stretches to fix your pain. And that’s something we can teach you how to do in a physiotherapy session.
Remember: ignoring your injury and attempting to train through the pain is never a good strategy!
